INTRODUCTION
The M2511A EXTMAC kit consists of :
1 × M2511A EXT optical disk drive
1 × 25 way D type to 50 way Centronics SCSI cable
1 × External SCSI bus terminator
2 × Installation diskettes
1 × Blank, unformatted magneto-optical disk
The diskettes contain installation and partitioning utilities for System 6 and 7. The software can be used on all Apple models ranging from Mac Plus to Quadra 900 although a special cable is required to attach to the PowerBook range.
HARDWARE INSTALLATION
1. Power down the Macintosh system and any attached units, and unplug the power cord.
2. If the drive is to be the only device connected to the Apple SCSI bus then ensure the SCSI bus terminator is in place on the SCSI OUT connector then move on to section 4.
3. Select the position the device will take on the SCSI bus and select a unique SCSI ID for the drive. If the drive is the last device on the SCSI bus then connect the external terminator to the SCSI OUT connector at the back of the drive.
4. Take the SCSI cable from the kit and connect the 25 way D type plug to the SCSI socket on the Macintosh system. Refer to the Macintosh documentation for external SCSI connection.
5. Connect the Centronics plug to the M2511A EXT SCSI IN socket.
6. Power up the M2511A EXT and computer.
7. Insert the blank media into the M2511A EXT.
SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
If you are not yet familiar with the Apple Macintosh user interface, please consult the Apple System documentation before continuing. It is also wise to make a copy of the relevant diskette and use the copy for all software installation procedures.
1. Insert a copy of the Disk Manager Mac diskette, that matches the system you are running (either 6 or 7).
2. The window containing the Disk Manager Mac utilities should appear on the screen. if not then double-click the diskette icon on the desktop.
3. Select the Disk Manager Mac icon, and double-click.
4. The Disk Manager Mac window will open showing all devices connected to the SCSI bus.
5. Select the M2511A EXT by clicking the radio button to the left of its SCSI ID.
6. Click on Auto Install to begin the software installation.
7. A window will be displayed warning that Initializing will DESTROY ALL of the data on the disk at SCSI ID X. Are you sure you want to proceed? Click OK to continue.
8. The optical disk media will now be verified and partition and filing system directory information will be written to the disk.
9. The system will then report the installation was successfully completed. Click on OK.
10. The system will return to the Disk Manager Mac menu. Click on Quit.
11. A message will be displayed concerning making the disk a startup disk. Click on OK to exit.
12. The Removable Disk icon for the M2511A EXT will now have appeared on the desktop, and can be selected in the same manner as other disks.
The driver for the optical disk resides on the optical media and will only be loaded if the media is present in the M2511A EXT when the system is powered up. Refer to 'Software Notes' for information on overcoming this limitation.
It is a good idea to copy the Disk Manager Mac files to a folder on the hard disk, so that in future you can easily open Disk Manager Mac to prepare new blank magneto-optical disks for use.
NOTE : The Disk Manager Mac software will disable the eject switch on the M2511A EXT. Ejecting disks is done via Command-E menu option or simply dragging the disk icon to the Wastebasket (or Trash).
SOFTWARE NOTES
There are two ways to enable loading of removable disk media on to the desktop after the system has been started with no disk present in the M2511A EXT:-
Method 1
The file 'LOAD REMOVABLE INIT' can be used on startup to constantly poll the M2511A EXT waiting for disks to be inserted. When a disk with valid Mac partitions is loaded it will appear on the desktop.
1. To install this file place the diskette marked Disk Manager Mac, System 6, DMMAC and UTILITIES in one of the diskette drives on your system. The Disk Manager Mac window will open.
2. Double-click on the System Folder icon. The System Folder will open.
3. In this folder you will see the Load Removable INIT icon. For System 7 users, this file should be copied to the Extensions Folder within the System Folder on the boot disk. For System 6 users, this file should be copied to the System Folder on the boot disk.
4. Select the Restart the menu option. The icon will appear at the bottom of the screen during boot up to show the driver is loaded.
5. When a valid disk is loaded it will be presented on the desktop.
Method 2
The 'Mounter' utility can be executed from the Apple Menu to mount new disks on to the desktop.
1. To install this file, place the diskette marked Disk Manager Mac, System 6, DMMAC and UTILITIES in one of the diskette drives on your system. The Disk Manager Mac window will open.
2. Double-click on the Mounter suitcase icon.
3. For System 7 users the Mounter suitcase will open revealing a file called 'Mounter'. This should be copied to the Apple Menu Folder within the System Folder on the boot disk. For System 6 users, the Font/DA Mover application will open the suitcase and reveal the Desk Accessory 'Mounter'. This should be installed in the System File located in the System Folder. Users of third party Font and Desk Accessory Managers should refer to the application documentation for instructions.
3. The Mounter utility will now be available on the Apple Menu.
4. Running the Mounter utility by selecting it from the Apple Menu will display all mounted devices.
6. Insert a valid Macintosh disk into the M2511A EXT.
7. Click on Load New SCSI Drives. The Removable Disk will be mounted and will appear in the Mounter window and also on the desktop.
