The M2512A EXT is a high performance 3.5 inch external optical disk subsystem suitable for attaching to any system that utilises a SCSI interface. The subsystem housing consists of cooling fan, cleaning filter and power supply which auto detects the supply voltage.

Power switch This is located on the front facia and is a latching push-button switch. Push once to power on the M2512A EXT, push again to power off. Power LED This green LED will illuminate if D.C. power is present in the M2512A EXT (i.e. if the power switch has been pushed). Please note that A.C. power will be present inside the M2512A EXT all the time that the mains supply cable is installed and connected to a live mains socket. Disk insertion slot This is where optical disk media is inserted into the drive. For vertical orientation ensure that the disk label is to the left, and for horizontal orientation ensure that the disk label is facing up. Push the optical media fully in to enable loading. Eject Button Push this button to eject media from the drive. This electrical eject button is active only when the M2512A EXT is powered on. Please note that the operation of this button may be inhibited by system software (e.g Macintosh systems). Emergency eject hole To be used to eject media when power has been lost. Insert the emergency eject tool supplied in the kit (a paper clip will do) in this hole, and carefully push to eject the media.

Drive activity LED This green LED will illuminate whenever the optical drive is reading, writing or seeking.

SCSI ID select switch Set the SCSI address of the M2512A EXT by use of the + and - buttons to match the system requirements. Default address is 4. SCSI connectors The M2512A EXT has two Centronics type SCSI connectors. One for SCSI in and the second for SCSI out. Either connector can be used for in or out. A.C. power in This is an IEC standard mains input plug. Connect the mains supply (110V or 240V) by pushing the corresponding connector of the mains cable supplied into this socket. To ensure safe operation, ensure that the mains cable is not connected to a live supply prior to installation. Removable air filter element The filter element cleans the cooling air supplied to the M2512A EXT by the fan. It should be removed and cleaned on a regular basis to ensure efficient air cooling. The filter cover can be easily removed by a small screwdriver or paper clip. To protect the optical drive from dust do not run with the filter element removed. Spare filters are supplied in the kit.

Options Switch Settings

The option switch is located at the back of the drive and can be configured as follows :

00000114.gif

Key 1 Device Type

ON* = OPTICAL

OFF = HARD DISK

The M2512A EXT can be configured to report itself as a removable optical or removable hard disk drive device. This should be set to optical unless attaching to an IBM OS/2 system.

Key 2 Macintosh Mode

ON = ENABLED

OFF* = DISABLED

To operate on Apple systems set this switch to ON.

Key 3 Auto spindle stop

ON* = ENABLED

OFF = DISABLED

When set to ON, the spindle motor will automatically stop if the drive has received no command for a period of thirty minutes. This reduces heat, power consumption and dust contamination. If immediate access to files is required then set to this switch to OFF.

Key 4 Non-Verify After Write

ON = ENABLED

OFF* = DISABLED

Writing to a magneto-optical disk is a three cycle operation - erase, write, verify and this results in the write speed being significantly less than the read speed. Verification is performed to ensure that data was correctly written to the media and was not affected by adverse circumstances. For complete data integrity then this switch must be set to OFF. Specialist applications such as real time sound recording will require faster write speeds so this switch can be set to ON.

Key 5 SCSI Level

ON* = SCSI-2

OFF = SCSI-1

Most systems (PC, MAC and Note Kits) will require this to be set to SCSI-2 mode.

Key 6 SCSI Terminator

ON* = ENABLED

OFF = DISABLED

The M2512A EXT has a built in active terminator for the SCSI bus. If the device is physically the last device or the only device on the bus then this function must be enabled.
