Fujitsu introduces the DynaMO City 640, which, incorporating the world's first 640MB ISO standard magneto-optical (MO) disk drive, is designed to complement any desktop and portable computing environment. The MO cartridge used by the drive is approximately the same size as an existing 3.5" floppy disk but stores 440 times its capacity. This is an equivalent capacity to a CD-ROM, however, the MO cartridge can be written to an almost unlimited number of times with CD-ROMs being confined to only reading stored data. Unlike conventional magnetic media such as hard disks, MO cartridges are less likely to be affected by physical shock and are totally unaffected by magnetic fields in a normal environment.

Performance is enhanced by a typical 35 millisecond seek time to data and a generous 512KB buffer which can be further improved on by using direct overwrite (LIMDOW) disks. The small, robust and removable nature of the media lends itself well to project based applications such as multimedia authoring, computer aided design and manufacturing, visual and aural arts, pre-press typesetting and document imaging processing. Its exceptional reliability and extraordinary archival life, currently specified at 40 years, makes it a favoured storage medium for more conventional office application uses such as personal system backup.

The concept of Magneto-Optical technology is backed by standards approved by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) and guarantees backward compatibility as the development programme evolves and assures system integrators of their investment for the future, especially when incorporated into a potentially expensive business data storage strategy.

The DynaMO City 640 is offered with personality kits that will allow it to be configured into three of the most popular environments, namely Apple Macintosh 68K and Power PC Systems, desktop PCs, and the Notebook and Laptop PC platforms. The Apple kit enables connection via the external SCSI bus, which is present on all Macintosh systems while the PC kit includes a 16-bit SCSI interface card. The notebook and laptop kit includes an adapter that attaches to the printer port of the system and offers high data transfer rates while still retaining full printer functionality. Everything to connect to these systems, including device drivers, cabling and comprehensive installation instructions, is supplied in one practical and attractive retail box.
