Installing the Print Partner 10 / 14 under NT using TCP/IP
 

To use the Fujitsu PrintPartner 10/14 under NT with the TCP/IP protocol, the only requirement on the printer side is to set the printers network adaptors (IP) address, there are a number of ways of doing this.

The Ethernet B board is supplied with a default IP address of 192.168.0.100. If you are unsure of the status of the Ethernet board, please refer to the notes below on resetting the board.

Option 1. Establish a Telnet connection to the printer at its default address of 192.168.0.100. Don’t forget that the IP address of the terminal being used will need to be reconfigured such that it is on the same logical networks as the printer i.e. 192.168.0.xxx

Be aware that on larger networks its possible that routers and bridges between your terminal and the printer may not allow connection to the printers default address due to the settings within the routers & bridges. Option 2 may be easier in this case.

Option 2. Establish a direct link between your terminal Ethernet interface and the printers Ethernet interface, using either 10base2 coax connection or a 10baseT cable ( must be a cross over cable).

Once a Telnet link to the printer is established the printer will respond as shown below

At this point type SHOW IP

This will cause the boards current IP address setting to be displayed, to set the printers new address which you should obtain from your network supervisor enter the command as shown below (Further parameters can be displayed by typing SHOW NETWORK)

EB-IPX>SET IP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the printers new address as defined by your network administrator

It may also be necessary to set the netmask in a similar manner to the above

Now type QUIT to log off from the printer. Cycle the printers power to cause the new address to become active.

The printer is now configured for TCP/IP printing.

Now move to the NT terminal, please note this document was written for NT ver 3.51, however the same functionality is provided with NT ver 4.0

Ensure that the Microsoft TCP/IP LPR printing protocol is installed on your NT workstation

Ensure that a relevant entry is entered into the HOSTS file. For the purposes of this example, assume a network number of 192.1.0.xxx and that the printer has been assigned IP address 192.1.0.14 make the following entry in the HOSTS file.

192.1.0.14 PP14NET

At this point the connection to the printer can be confirmed by opening a DOS window and typing the command

PING 192.1.0.14 or PING PP14NET

This should result in a reply from the printer indicating it is ‘alive’ ie. A valid TCP/IP connection has been made, any other message indicating the request timed out indicates a problem with the TCP/IP protocol under NT or the HOSTS file. In that case consult your network administrator.

Open the Print Manager

Select Printer at the left top corner in your Print Manager window and then Create Printer this will display the window shown below.

Enter the value for Printer Name, select Driver, add Description, activate Share Printer, add Share Name and add Location info.

  Select Print to and from the list box select Other. This will produce a new window "Print Destinations" where you must select LPR Port

 The selection of LPR Port opens a window called "Add LPR compatible printer".

Now add under "Name or address of host providing lpd" the MAC address (192.1.0.14) or the printer name from the hosts file (PP14NET)

Now add "lp" ( Must be lower case ) under "Name of printer on that machine".

Pressing OK in the "Add LPR compatible printer" will return you to the "Printer Properties" window and now you can find the right entry in the "Print to" field. In this example a valid entry could be 192.1.0.14:LP or PP14NET:LP. Note that your entry "lp" now is listed in capital letters!

Click Details to get the window "Printer Details ####" and check the entry in Print Processor (must be winprint) and Default Datatype (must be RAW).

Now installation and definition is completed and you can define all other functions like printer setup (in the window "Printer Properties") or Job Defaults ( in the window "Printer Defaults").

Now follow the default rules on your client PC to capture a shared network printer to an LPT port on the client or you can test the printer connection directly as a user on the NT Server under Windows conditions.

To make an quick test, open a DOS window on your NT Server machine, and print a file by using the LPR command.

For example to print the AUTOEXEC.BAT file from your system you can use:

LPR -S192.1.0.14 -Plp c:\autoexec.bat or
LPR -SPP14NET -Plp c:\autoexec.bat

You may need to press the READY button to eject this print out, since by default this job would not produce a Form Feed to eject the page.

Notes:

Resetting the Ethernet B board

Set dip switch 2 on the Ethernet board to the on position, install board into printer, power on , allow printer to come ready. Switch off printer, remove board and set switch 2 back to the off position, re-install board
