Environmental Issues Associated with Hard Disk Drives
Preserving the global environment has to be a major concern of all companies. Fujitsu has for many years been monitoring the environmental impact of its operations and developing technology that helps to protect the environment.

In July 1992 Fujitsu drew up a formal declaration of its commitment to the environment, clarifying how the company and its employees should treat environmental issues. This declaration states that Fujitsu will use its technology and creativity to promote harmony between human activity and the environment.

Fujitsu has already abandoned the use of ozone-depleting substances , well ahead of internationally mandated target dates. In December l992, Fujitsu replaced CFCs used for washing parts by using a new fine aqueous cleaning system and more environmentally-friendly solvents.

In October l994, Fujitsu stopped using 1,1,1-trichloroethane as a flux cleaner for printed circuit boards, and instead developed its own technologies: an alternative cleaning solvent called "Perclean", and the "Clean Soldering Method" which eliminates the need for cleaning after soldering. Perclean has proved to be stronger, safer, and cheaper than 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and is being made available worldwide as a contribution to protecting the environment.
